When working with clients, I am surprised at how many have a domain but don’t do anything with it. Having a url to put on your business card is pretty pointless if it simply goes to your web hosting companies generic landing page. While this is great news for me (it means you are in need of a web designer!) not so great for potential consumers who feel they have wasted time paying you a visit.
Let’s say you have a functioning site at www.yourbusinessname.com. Why then have a link to an e-mail address using myname@hotmail.com. A free account screams amateur. Simply make sure you sign up with a good web-hosting company that allows you to create and check e-mail accounts using the same domain. Even a catch all of info@yourbusinessname.com is a start.
For the month of May I am offering free web audits to anyone that simply asks. Some of the areas of review are pretty basic in nature but again, seems to be the basic items that are needed for analysis. Loading time of your site, image compression, ease of navigation, broken or inaccurate links and content are often easy to recognize for a new set of eyes. An error, typo or issue with your site could be staring you in the face every day but unless pointed out, or explained, you may never see the need for change.
Understanding search engine optimization and rankings is also important to make your web presence mean anything. These are also areas that I can cover within the audit. Simply having a site isn’t enough. Make sure you review it at least every week to check for out of date information. Have friends take a look and ask for their honest opinion (if you feel it won’t ruin your relationship!).
